Chiron enters Taurus

June 19th ~ 26th

Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity. ~ Pema Chodron

On June 19th Chiron makes its debut entrance into Taurus. This is just a brief preview where Chiron will merely dip its toes into the next sign on its journey through the zodiac. On September 17th it will retrograde back into Aries, and then will enter Taurus again on April 15th where it will remain for the next 7 years. Chiron enters Taurus just before the Sun enters Cancer on the Solstice, forming a sextile of potential with the Sun on the Earth’s axis. Likewise the Sun and Chiron are both making positive alignments with the True Node, marking this as a significant and notable event globally as well as personally.

So what can we expect from the approximately 7-year transit of Chiron in Taurus? While Chiron was in Aries we were all cautioned to focus on our own self-healing. If we don’t tend to our own wounds, we are no use to anyone else. But as Chiron moves from Aries to Taurus it makes its initial shift from the individual, from the independent warrior, to interdependence. One of the things we become aware of are the ways that we need and depend on each other in ways that we may not have fully appreciated. And that includes our relationship to the Earth our Mother.

It will become abundantly clear how we are connected economically, how the economic balance and imbalance affects the natural flow of commerce, and how much we rely on the health and well-being of the planet as well as our physical bodies.

Taurus has to do with financial interconnectedness, worthiness, and what we value; and Chiron here will compel us to address wealth scarcity due to consolidation, and food scarcity due to climate  and economic changes. But it also compels us to consider how well we value ourselves on a personal level. For instance being willing to ask for help, and/or for what we deserve and/or need in order to survive.

Our homework for the next 7-8 years is thus:

  • Releasing old Soul Contracts that are self-limiting and no longer valid for who you are now, including: Sacrificing your own needs in order to make others happy (the wound of martyrdom); Devaluing your own self-worth and self-esteem (the wound of poverty); putting aside your own destiny in order to fit in (the wound of scapegoatism, ostracism or isolation).

  • Learning to set appropriate boundaries (with others, and with yourself). Knowing when you need to say No More; Enough is Enough; and where to draw the line.

  • New initiatives were begun when Chiron was in Aries. Chiron in Taurus is when we are being asked to give structure and substance to what we had begun. This is when we work hard to give value to, and make our lives more sustainable.

  • A need for Economic restructuring, both locally and globally. Chiron was in Taurus during the economic crash of 1929 and the Great Depression that followed. As a result of those events a massive economic restructuring occurred which included the redistribution of wealth. The following Chiron in Taurus era (1976-1984) acted as a reaction to that, coinciding with the conservative Reagan/Thatcher administrations which emphasized deregulation, in order to encourage market growth; which also ultimately resulted in a gross inequality of wealth distribution, and the birth of the mega-corporation. Both contributed to the crash of 2008. Now we live in a world where a handful of trillionaires thrive and the bottom 97% struggle to make ends meet, if at all. Never has there been such a disparity between the haves and have nots. It is not sustainable.

  • Ecological tipping point: food scarcity; severe weather changes; our collective responsibility to the planet that supports us and makes our lives possible. Without this, we have nothing. Chiron exposes the wound, but Chiron also brings us the remedy. It was also during the Chiron in Taurus transit of the 1930’s, that the Agricultural Adjustment Act was passed (as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal) that would transform the ways we do American agriculture. These policies have set the foundation for modern farming. which helped to support struggling rural communities. Then they had the Dust Bowl. Now we have wild fires and climate chaos.

  • Chiron will show us what is broken and not working any more. Economic, political and ecological tipping points are merely the outer ramifications of something that goes much deeper. This is when we ask the questions about when enough is enough. And is it possible for a tiny minority to own too much? Perhaps this could include moving away from our reliance on fossil fuels, coal and other limited resources. And whereas Oil has been a commodity that we can’t seem to live without… this will of necessity be shifting. Of course these are just some possibilities. But know that these economic, political and ecological tipping points are the evidence of what is broken and needs to be fixed. Chiron not only shows us the wound, it brings us the remedies.

  • Individually Chiron in Taurus has to do with our own sense of self-worth. Whether that is financially, psychologically or otherwise. We might want to ask ourselves how well we value who we are, and what we have to offer. As well as how well we feel valued by others or by the society in which we live. We have to ask ourselves why some groups are valued more than others. And why some are being asked to make sacrifices. While others are not.

The Solstice on June 21st is one of the 4 magical corners of the Solar Year. The longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere (and the shortest in the South), it is a day of power and initiation. Memorialized at sunrise by the heel-stone of Stonehenge, Midsummer has been celebrated with bonfires  which welcome prosperity and fertility and drive out evil. So how significant is it that the Solstice is so closely sextile the centaur Chiron fresh into Taurus, the sign associated with prosperity and fertility?

Sextiles are aspects of potential and opportunity. It’s what we make of them that count. So rather than thinking of this as an uphill climb, or that the decks are stacked against us… we are being shown the ways and means that a new world is possible. It’s up to us to make the most of it.

Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world. All things break. And all things can be mended. Not with time, as they say, but with intention. So go. Love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally. The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is you. ~ L.R. Knost
