The New Moon in Gemini & a mini Cradle

June 12th ~ 19th

Mind is thus neither the source of light, like a shining sun, nor the reflected light of something greater, like the moon, but a shimmering pool of contingent potential, capable of reflecting sun, moon, and any other object that happens to dance upon its surface. Its function is more important than its essence, and is influenced significantly by the nature of what gets stirred into its pristine waters. ~ Andrew Olendzki

On June 14th (15th) we have a New Moon at 24º Gemini 03’. As with all New Moons this speaks to new beginnings. Gemini is a sign of wit and dexterity, filled with restless curiosity, and the changing tides of the seasons. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, Spring makes way for Summer, we emerge from our dens, greet the neighbors, and make it a point to catch up with each other.

Gemini is a Mercury sign, and as of this week, Mercury has entered its shadow and is now appearing to slow down for its retrograde station on June 29th. In the sign of Cancer, Mercury is gradually withdrawing, rather than engaging the outer world. And as it does so, instead of conferring with each other as we usually would this time of year, we may find ourselves more inclined to speak to ourselves, connect with our gut, and ask ourselves how we feel about what we are hearing, seeing and understanding.

We recently had a Venus/Jupiter conjunction at 25º Cancer, within a degree of where Mercury will station later this month. The Venus/Jupiter transit is a transit of hope. Of wanting to expand our horizons and our dreams. But we might also want to consider that the Venus/Jupiter transit is showing us that help is there as it is needed and that we are all connected in ways that we might not thoroughly appreciate or comprehend. Hope is a powerful tool. So are these connections.

Along with Mercury our attention will be turning within, where we are being asked to process and assimilate all that we had been experiencing, learning, hearing, and sensing. In order to do this well, we are needing to connect with our own hearts and minds. And in order to do that well, we are being asked to take a time out. Take a breather. Step back. Feel. And process.

The New Moon in Gemini is traditionally a good time to:

  • Learn something New: Take a class, become more informed, indulge your curiosity. Go to a library. Venture into a book store. Attend a lecture. Learn a new skill. Ask questions.

  • Share Information: Start a journal. Call old friends. Chat with the neighbors. Meet for lunch. Inquiring minds want to know, and our curiosity is needing to get recharged.

  • Get to know your neighborhood or environment: Short day trips. A visit to the new shop in town. Act like a tourist visiting a new locale.

  • Gain a deeper understanding: With Mercury now entering its shadow, although Gemini is a busy and curious sign, we are being asked to become more reflective. This will be even more so after the Solstice on the 21st, when we are all seeking some sort of safe retreat and serious introspection. This in turn allows us to process all that we have or are learning, The clarity we gain can prove to be useful later on.

The Gemini tone: Gemini can be very busy and awash with information and distraction. We are curious, and filled with all sorts of ideas, as we are drawn here, there and everywhere. This is also a very social sign, and you will see the throngs re-emerging out into the world.

What is needed: Find ways to connect with your heart center, and allow that to serve you as your lodestar going forward. Then make a list of questions that you would like to see answered or get more information about over the weeks ahead.

New Moons are still times of great potential in which we can sow seeds of intention.. as well as hope. And to discover the right environments that will allow these to thrive. But even with the newness of the Gemini Lunar Month, allow yourself to turn inwards with the slowing pace of Mercury, the Gemini ruling planet, while also paying attention to what you are learning, seeing and sensing. Ease towards the inner stillness that awaits us at the end of the month and into July as we then fall into the safety and security of the Cradle that awaits us there.

Just before the New Moon on Sunday, Venus enters Leo, and then proceeds to form a mini “Cradle”.  Just before Venus enters Leo it will make a square to Chiron in the very last degree of Aries. And then when it enters Leo it will oppose Pluto. Like Mercury, Venus is a personal planet, and as it crosses the cusp from Cancer to Leo it dares to make that which we feel more conscious. Squares are aspects of conflict and sometimes discomfort. So we might ask ourselves with these transits: What buttons are being pushed? or What wounds or doubts are being unearthed and exposed?

Together these transits can feel like abandonment, being left out, feeling betrayed, a fear of poverty, of not having enough, of heartbreak, and the denial of the very things we thought we needed to survive. Or so it may seem on the surface. And it could feel as if these are obstacles that are just too powerful to overcome. And yet when Venus made its conjunction to Jupiter last week, it was telling us that there is hope. And perhaps far greater than we might realize.

For not only will Venus oppose Pluto as it moves into Leo, Venus will also make a trine to Neptune and a sextile to Uranus, forming a transitory cradle of support, help and the creative solutions that can solve our dilemmas. Through this configuration we are being asked to see our highest potential, and trust that if we are willing to consider new options, new perspectives and new information, it is not only possible to improve our own lives, but perhaps with a little help, the world at large.

This is because there is a powerful configuration forming in the background of our lives, and Venus is tapping into it this coming week. One of the things that is gradually becoming more apparent, is that although many people seem to be at odds with one another, that we appear to live in different worlds, we actually live in the same world, and have a lot more in common than we realize. Uranus trine Pluto and sextile Neptune are trying to get us to understand, in a myriad of ways, how we are all so interconnected. More so than we thought.

We are connected economically and politically. We all depend on the generosity and sustenance that the Earth provides. And because we all live on the same planet and breathe the same air, we feel the same light of the Sun as it rises, and see the same beauty of the Moon as it waxes and wanes. And because we are interconnected on so many levels, in potential we are far more powerful than we think we are. All it takes is to make those connections, with the helpers, the knowers, the doers, the skilled practitioners. When we do so, almost anything is possible.

If you wish to make affirmations or intentions with the New Moon in Gemini, do so after the time of the New Moon in your area, but while it is still new and filled with potential (from the New Moon on Sunday -or Monday, depending on where you are- thru the Crescent Moon on Thursday, June 18th). Make your intentions and affirmations positive, and make them your own. Some possible intentions and/or affirmations for the New Moon in Gemini might be:

  • May I find joy in fulfilling my curiosity and satisfying my need to know.

  • With effortless dexterity I ride the winds and adapt to the changing tides.

  • I take pride in being able to see both sides of a situation clearly and objectively.
