“Neptune’s Horses” by Walter Crane
Miracles: You do not have to look for them. They are there, 24-7, beaming like radio waves all around you. Put up the antenna, turn up the volume - snap... crackle... this just in, every person you talk to is a chance to change the world... Hugh Elliott Standing Room Only weblog
On July 4th, Mars will make an exact conjunction just around midnight here in the US, to erratic and explosive Uranus. And as Mercury is now locked into its retrograde phase I find myself reflecting on a former Mars/Uranus conjunction in 2003. On August 14th, 2003, a series of power failures resulted in the biggest ever blackout in history affecting more than 50 million people across a huge swath of the Northeast United States.
All I remember was it leaving us sweltering in the dismal New York City heat. Firemen put sprinklers on the hydrants for the children to play in, people gathered to have barbecues in the streets, we hovered around board games, and residents gathered on their fire escapes in the evenings hoping for a rare wisp of a breeze. This week we are experiencing triple digit temperatures on the East Coast as Mars and Uranus dance in the sky, threatening mayhem to our power grids, to transportation, to whatever. Because that is what they do.
But there is another thing that can happen as Mars sidles up to Uranus, which could prove to be a different sort of domino effect. Hopefully the power grid will hold up under the stress, and we will bypass its explosive tendencies. But Mars can still operate as a catalyst in so many positive ways. Illuminating, it can be explosive in its ability to light up certain areas of our lives. We see things with sudden accuracy, and in a way that we cannot look away again. Kind of like when you are watching a fireworks show, which are going to be everywhere in the US on the 4th of July. And know that when we are willing to look at things from another perspective, we may never be able to see things quite the same way again.
Mars is a planet that often acts as a catalyst. It encourages us to DO something. Mars/Uranus can be a pivot. A time to initiate or act on all those things that you’ve been thinking about. And that is despite Mercury being all retrograde. Mars is activating the Uranian wing of the July Cradle, one of the most significant planetary events of the year. For not only is Mars stirring up excitement for all things New, Innovative and Unique, it is also aspecting all the other outer planets involved in this rare configuration. Mars is trying to make it all that much more personal. It’s bringing it home.
On Tuesday, July 7th, Neptune, which also plays a pat in the cradle, stations retrograde, as if to say, Don’t forget about Me! When planets station they make themselves known, and Neptune is doing so with bells on this year. But first a bit about what a cradle is again:
A Cradle is a configuration, much like its name, seeking safety and protection. Contained within an opposition (in this case an opposition between Jupiter and Pluto) which stands between us and the world at large. This represents a conflict here that we feel compelled to resolve. Whenever Pluto is involved it can feel a little ‘dangerous’. Jupiter/Pluto oppositions are trying to show us something about what the impending danger might be. However, due to the unique confluence of conditions, we have some wedge planets that have the capacity to turn what previously seemed a problem, or even dangerous,, into something that has a tremendous amount of potential for success.
If escaping from the danger is your goal, the wedge planets are here to show us the way. They can help you to avoid dealing with something that just feels much larger than yourself. But they can also bring New, Innovative, Unexpected, Unique or Creative solutions that allow us to transcend the danger. The wedge planets, Uranus and Neptune have some unique and special properties that allow us to do so.
Uranus and Neptune will make an exact sextile on July 15th solidifying their pact to unite in a shared cause. This is the 3rd of 5 exact sextiles formed since the end of last August, the last being one year from now. Sextiles imply opportunities. There is nothing to compel us or force us to take advantage of the opportunities that this collaboration provides. They take some effort on our part. Now it could also happen with outer planet transits that things just seem to naturally evolve out of the fabric of our everyday lives. Uranus/Neptune transits often coincide with evolutionary periods in our history that can do this.
The last time Uranus and Neptune were sextile was in the late 60’s when Uranus and Pluto (both in Virgo) were sextile Neptune. This time around Neptune is sextile both Uranus and Pluto again. What we saw then were a series of progressive and revolutionary movements: the anti-war movement, the civil rights and women’s rights movements, and the environmental movement which culminated with Earth Day in 1970.
The Uranus/Neptune transit may be subtle, but combined with all of the other significant outer planet transits of the Cradle it becomes that much more of a powerful force for humanitarian pursuits and progressive growth and change. We are being asked to lead with our Ideals rather than our pockets. To lean into social changes that take into consideration the betterment of humanity as a whole, while challenging old stagnant concepts and policies that limit the evolutionary progress of society.
This week, thanks to the conjunction of Mars & Uranus, and the station of Neptune we double down into the Uranus/Neptune part of this equation.
This week Neptune at 4º of Aries, stations for its retrograde phase which lasts until December 12th. Planets burrow in and create a deeper imprint at their stations. They make themselves known. Neptune, transcendent and beyond the material plane makes itself known internally. It speaks to us in feelings, through our intuition, and our dreams. Our senses, which are already heightened by the Mercury retrograde become that much more acute. We see more, hear more, feel more, notice more.
This can be insightful on an inner level, however Neptune can also be confounding. Feelings are not always clear where Neptune is involved. But with Neptune now ensconced in Aries, his role as spiritual warrior asks us to take heed of those feelings and impressions. It asks us: What are those ideals, those dreams that you are most willing to put yourself on the line for, to even fight for if need be? Neptune, the planet that has domain over artists, mystics and visionaries, is asking us to listen to the still small voices of conscience and divinity that urge us to move in a certain direction.
This is a good week to work on those inner and outer senses. Feel and perceive the subtleties, the shifts, that are carrying us along with the tide. Pay attention to your dreams, as these are more likely to speak to you at this time. Seek inspiration. All the more so this week that Neptune stations, as it seeks to draw us to consider what is possible when we take our idealistic visions for the future that much more seriously.
Ways to cultivate that crucial connection to Neptune during its 5 month retrograde phase:
Make a deeper commitment to your most salient spiritual or ideal aspirations.
Revisit a spiritual practice that may be calling you. That can include a meditation practice, or mind/body practices that deepen some sort of inner connection.
Take out time out for reflection. Dare to dream your dreams.
Listen to music. Dance. Reflect. Indulge in those things that touch your heart and makes it sing. Immerse yourself in Nature. See great films. Read some excellent books. Do art. Even if you are not very good at it. Learn to speak without having to say anything..
Embrace Neptune: cultivate your imagination, do everyday acts of compassion, honor your ideals, read the cards, throw the coins, scry the tea leaves, walk by the sea. Immerse yourself in the beauty and profundity of nature. Figure out what beauty is for, and then allow it to change your life.
Whatever career you may choose for yourself: doctor, lawyer, teacher ~ let me propose an avocation to be pursued along with it. Become a dedicated fighter for civil rights. Make it a central part of your life. It will make you a better doctor, a better lawyer, a better teacher. It will enrich your spirit as nothing else possibly can. It will give you that rare sense of nobility that only comes from love and selflessly helping your fellow man. Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for human rights. You will make a greater person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
