The New Moon in Aquarius 2024

February 9th ~ 16th

The above detail is from a Dragon scroll rendered by Chen Rong

Don’t bend; don’t water it down; don’t try to make it logical; don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly. ~ Franz Kafka

On February 9th we welcome in the New Moon at 20º Aquarius 41’, at 6 PM here on the East Coast of the United States (3 pm Pacific Time; 11 pm Greenwich, Universal Time). This is a Super Moon, made all the more intense, and doubling down on all things Aquarius with a close square to Aquarius-ruler, Uranus. Super Moons occur when the New or Full Moon is also at its closest point to the Earth in its orbit. We have 3 Super New Moons this year, including the Total Eclipse on April 8th. Not only do these super moons appear to have an effect on the tides of the globe, but also the tides and affairs of humankind.

The Aquarius New Moon is a moon of stark realizations, of new awarenesses, of sudden change and all the adjustments and ramifications that occur because of those changes and awarenesses. Nothing will remain hidden long within the ambit of this New Moon.

We are heading into a strong Aquarius paradigm now that Pluto has entered the sign. Mars also enters Aquarius this week, followed by Venus on Friday the 16th. But the New Moon, as a harbinger of New Beginnings, sets the tone for both immediate and long terms goals that will allow each of us to embrace that Aquarian vibe through having the freedom to live our lives more truly and authentically. What that actually is for you may become even more evident over the next few months, perhaps due to illuminating changes that have already been coming down the pike.

Look for some intensity building with Mars conjunct Pluto this week. Mars is a planet that urges us to act on initiatives that Pluto is still only germinating in that first degree of Aquarius. Could be a time of incredible potential, but can devolve into a bit of chaotic rebel rousing. Positively we can all use the determination and willpower that Mars/Pluto bring to make positive and revolutionary changes. Mars/Pluto in Aquarius is a metaphor for rebirthing, rebuilding, and radical transformation. Use Mars/Pluto weather to dig deep in order to connect with your passion, then make the commitment to make it a reality.

Mars/Pluto weather can also be very tricky. Mars conjunct Pluto in the radical sign of Aquarius is a force to be reckoned with. Rebellious. Contrary. Anything or anyone that feels controlling, forceful, or manipulative will be rejected outright. It could also feel as if you are contending with forces way beyond your control. Mars/Pluto weather can wreak madness and chaos at its worst, but also be a force for progressive change when it is at its best.

The New Moon on Friday is an excellent time to set intentions, create some sort of plan, or recharge ourselves with affirmations. If you wish to set intentions or make affirmations with the New Moon, do so after the New Moon and up until the Crescent Moon on Monday the 12th. The New Moon occurs on February 9th at 2:59 PM on the Pacific Coast of the US, 5:59 PM Eastern Standard Time, and 10:59 PM Universal or Greenwich Time.

The sign of Aquarius is a sign of ideology, individuality, and a firm determination to follow a path based on one’s own ideals. Even if that means having to readjust the rules a bit in order to do so. We often think of the sign of Aquarius, and its ruling planet Uranus, as portents of a New Age glittering with crystals and humanitarian ideals. But it can also be about having some very firm ideas about the way that things should be.

One thing is sure: Aquarius is a sign of authenticity, where we are asked to uphold our own unique brand whatever that may be. And with Uranus square the New Moon, we’re all being asked to honor that which is special and unique about each and every one of us.

Today is the first day of the rest of our lives, may we choose to live it truly and authentically.

Some possible intentions or affirmations for the New Moon in Aquarius might be:

  • I dare to walk my own path, following my own unique vision.

  • I am able to see solutions when I am willing to look at a problem from another perspective.

  • May I be open to new and innovative solutions that can help me to remove obstacles and ultimately achieve my goals.

  • I want all fear of being different or standing out from others be lifted from me.

  • I vow to uphold the noble aspiration to defend equality and promote civil rights unconditionally.

  • When I surround myself with others who share similar ideals, I find myself motivated and inspired to do good works.

The Aquarius New Moon corresponds with the celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year. According to the Chinese Astrological Pantheon, we are entering the year of the Wood Dragon, which begins on February 10th, and culminates with the lantern festival at the Full Moon on February 24th. Much like the recent ingress of powerful Pluto into the sign of Aquarius, the year of the Wood Dragon comes flying in on a cloud of intense and transformational energy. Perhaps we can all take a cue from all of this Aquarian/Dragon vibe, to become the change that we would like to see in the world.
