January 2nd ~ 9th
Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul, As the swift seasons roll! Leave thy low-vaulted past! Let each new temple, nobler than the last, Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast, Till thou at length art free, Leaving thine outgrown shell by life’s unresting sea! ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes
What an interesting Full Moon we have coming up on January 3rd! Not only is it a supermoon, meaning that the Moon is close to the Earth in its orbit at the January Wolf Moon, but at the same time the Sun will be making a rare triple conjunction with Venus and Mars. From our perspective, both Venus and Mars have now slipped behind the Sun. Having been caught up within the rays of the Sun, and now rising and setting with the Sun, they have long since disappeared from the night sky. When Venus finally emerges from behind the Sun and is no longer consumed within its rays, it will rise as an evening star on around February 16th. Mars in its turn will be visible again, and rising as a morning planet in early March.
When the inner planets make these superior conjunctions, positioned on the other side of the Sun and far away from the Earth, they act a little like full moons. These superior conjunctions can be seen as times of culmination for the things that Venus (our desires, love, attachment, values and relating) and Mars (passion, will, action, motivation) represent. Love. Passion. How we love, what we love, and why we love them are being laid out for all to see.
Capricorn is associated with the Winter Season in the Northern Hemisphere, when the Sun appears to stand at the celestial Tropic of Capricorn in the South. But from the Northern perspective, Capricorn is a sign associated with the frigidity and stoicism of Winter, the time of year when it appears to decline. A time of year when it was and still is customary to gather and form warm circles amongst family and tribe. And so it is with the Cancer Full Moon that we seek warmth and comfort at our hearths and in our hearts. And it is this Moon that breaths life into the seeds being planted for the New Year to come.
This year the Full Moon at 13º Cancer falls on January 3rd (or 2nd depending on where you are in the world). Nostalgic, reflective, emotional and protective, the Full Moon is a day to indulge those wistful memories, looking back on yesteryear and from where we have since come. The Moon is reminding us of what we already have. Meanwhile the Sun in Capricorn is already strategizing our plans for the year to come. Capricorn is a sign armed with a plan and a resolve, which is quite helpful for making our annual New Year’s resolutions in January. It can also feel as if we are standing at the peak of a mountain looking out from where we have just come from, what we have accomplished, while also looking ahead to the future.
Cancer may be a reflective sign, and there may be some cherished memories that we are wanting to hold close to our chest, but with the triple conjunction and a not so minor aspect to Uranus, change, resolution, and new approaches are being called for. And with all of the major planets having changed, and/or changing signs in 2026, this idea of change and transformation will be true on so many levels.
In order to find ourselves in the scheme of things, we need to know who we are. At the Full Moon emotions can swim to the surface. All the more so with the Full Moon in emotional Cancer where memories swirl up through the cosmic mists of time, carrying with them all of their associated feelings. Pay attention to those feelings, for they are trying to clue you in to some realities about whether or not your needs are being met, which can prove to be essential in moving forward with your goals for the year ahead.
Change, with all of its attending feelings, hopes and fears is imminent and perhaps even inevitable as we enter 2026. For some, change could be met with trepidation, because of the fear of losing what we already have and love so well. For others, change can be met with excitement, because it can mean that things can get better. Either way, once it becomes apparent that much like a hermit crab, we have outgrown our old shells, it becomes evident that our outer circumstances are going to need an upgrade. Perhaps one that can serve us well into the future. So as we reflect on the year that was, and look forward to the year that is yet to be, think to yourself:
What improvements might you want to see in 2026?
What adjustments would you want to make in order to be a healthier, happier and/or better version of yourself?
What practical changes can you, or might you want to make this coming year in order to live your own best life?
Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better. ~ King Whitney Jr.
