Saturn enters Capricorn

December 15th ~ 22nd

Our character… is an omen of our destiny, and the more integrity we have and keep, the simpler and nobler that destiny is likely to be. ~ George Santayana

On December 19th (or the 20th depending on where you are) Saturn moves back home into the tropical sign of Capricorn. Whenever a major planet changes signs, so do we. There is a decided shift in the paradigm. Saturn shows us what we need to be paying attention to; what our current challenge is. Saturn work does not come easily; we usually have to pay some kind of price, and it can feel exhausting. But the achievements we make within the auspices of Saturn, are often some of the most important achievements we can make in our lives. Therefore, wherever you have the sign Capricorn in your natal chart, that is where you are going to be needing to do this hard work. This is where you are being challenged and asked to pay attention.

Saturn is quite strong in its own sign of Capricorn, where it will remain until 2020. For the good and the ill. Because Capricorn is Saturn-ruled; it has many of the same characteristics of this strict, no-nonsense planet. It is time, and we are ready, for this grand Saturn challenge. When Saturn enters Capricorn we are being asked to step up to the plate, to be responsible; take care of business; and take our obligations seriously:

The Infrastructure; Government; Structures: Saturn has domain over the bare bones, including our own skeletons! These also include the organizational structures that we depend on in order to maintain our security and stability in our own lives as well as in society. These are the sorts of things that prevent everything else from falling apart. Saturn wants us to build structures and foundations that we can depend on. And the stronger our foundations, the more security we will have. And yes, this includes our own bones, joints, and dental health. Even our skin. For this is the stuff that holds our bodies together.

Industry, Corporations: Saturn also has to do with Power Structures and those who wield the power. Sometimes these can be too rigid; too large; too powerful. One of the down sides of Saturn is selfishness and materialism; and promoting one’s own self-interest at the expense of others. Corporatocracy; “too big to fail corporations”; and a continuing trend towards plutocracy can also be expected, especially since Pluto is also in Capricorn. But Saturn in Capricorn is also about taking responsibility; Doing the right thing; and taking a more paternalistic approach to leading.

Leadership: We might expect leaders to be held to a higher standard with Saturn entering Capricorn. Saturn in Capricorn is about respect for others, and respect for self. It’s about Duty; Dignity and setting the example for others to follow. When Saturn comes home to Capricorn we are all going to be expected to step up to the plate.

Elders: Saturn represents, not only the leaders in society, but the elders. So issues surrounding aging, ageism, social security and medicare safety nets, will likely be on the table.

Responsibility: The responsibilities, burdens or expectations brought to bear under Saturn can sometimes feel weighty and exhausting; they can also sometimes feel tedious and demanding. However, it is also at these challenging times that we can make the most progress.

Rules and Laws: Saturn is a stickler for ‘right and wrong’. Rules and laws are there for a reason. Without them society would fall into anarchy and chaos. However, laws and rules laced with morality and judgment can prove to be very rigid and limiting. Saturn in Capricorn can set the bar so high or be so restrictive that no one could possibly live up to the standards and expectations being set. But Saturn also has to do with Integrity; and being an upstanding citizen in the community. It will be up to each of us to define for ourselves, exactly what that means for us.

Consequences: Saturn challenges us to grow and to excel. It shows us what we have outgrown and no longer need. It also shows us where we need to further grow and develop. With Saturn, much of what you reap is determined by what you have sown. One thing that becomes evident with Saturn in its own sign, is that ‘the buck stops here’, so that a lot depends on our own self induced efforts. However, the more effort we put into our work, our duty and our goals, the greater the rewards (and a sense of self-accomplishment) will be.

My mother drew a distinction between achievement and success. She said that ‘achievement is the knowledge that you have studied and worked hard and done the best that is in you. Success is being praised by others, and that’s nice too, but not as important or satisfying. Always aim for achievement and forget about success.’ ~ Helen Hayes

The Sun will also enter Capricorn on the day of the Solstice on December 21st. This is one of the powerful 4 corners of the year. As we pause in this sacred time between the Solstice and the New Year, we often reflect on the past year, and the events that led up to this moment in time. And we also think in terms of what to anticipate in the year ahead. This Solstice comes on the heels of a New Moon at the end of Sagittarius (on the 17th or 18th). New Moons in and of themselves are symbolic of New Beginnings. The Sabian Symbol for the degree of the New Moon is “A sculptor at his work”: by visualizing the potential in the opportunities and materials we have at our disposal, we can invest them with new life and form. We might ask ourselves: what is our vision for the future?

This year, as the Sun enters Capricorn, it will also be conjunct Capricorn-ruler, Saturn, shining a light on the structures of our lives: if they are firm and reliable, then Saturn will only make these structures stronger; if they are weak, then Saturn will challenge them for stability, and may even take them away. If that is the case then it is time for us to create better, more reliable structures that we can truly depend on well into the future. The Sun and Saturn are going to be bringing a certain area of your life into focus. Pay attention, because that is where the focus is going to be for some time to come.
