A Healing New Moon

March 16th ~ 23rd

Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity. ~ Pema Chodron

The New Moon on Saturday comes riding in on Chiron, the Wounded Healer, in the late degrees of sensitive and compassionate Pisces. The week then quickly transitions into fiery Aries on Tuesday, culminating at the end of the month with a feisty and contentious Full Moon on the 31st. Regardless, this is still a Pisces New Moon, and we are needing to navigate and even plumb the depths of these Piscean waters, even before we arrive at the Aries Equinox on the 20th. Our very health and well-being may depend on it.

And then there is Mars. Mars will be asking for accountability and reckoning when it enters Capricorn on the same day as the New Moon. And we will be needing to navigate some treacherous and formidable waters over the next few weeks in order to do so. The Aries Equinox on the 20th of March opens the astrological New Year, and also sets the tone for the year ahead. With a very activity driven and reactive Sun square Mars, we will need all the strength and energy we can at our disposal.

In order to fight the good fight over the next several weeks, we are first needing to make ourselves whole. The recent Mars/Chiron square may have already opened old wounds, or recreated new ones that are layered upon old scars from long ago. Mars brings any pain, harm, urgency to the surface which can manifest as physical, mental, emotional, psychological or spiritual pain, laced with fear, insecurity and shame. If you have become aware of a recent wound, it was to make you aware of some even deeper wounds that are trying to come to the surface to be healed and released, once and for all.

Chiron not only makes us aware of our own and others pain and suffering, it also brings us the tools to heal these. There is going to be a lot of activity ahead, so it is important to do this inner healing work now. Through Pisces we are better able to connect to that subtle part of our psyche that we identify with spirit, soul, Higher Self; as well as the subtle inner body which is the basis for the grosser physical aspects of ourselves. But in order to make full use of the time, we will need to turn down some of the noise in our lives and initiate some serious self care in whichever way works best for you. Think of it as a retreat with whatever healing modalities, or peaceful self-indulgences, you have at your disposal.

A friend shared the following meditation which resonates well with this New Moon. It is a Tonglen meditation, or a “Taking and Giving” practice, as outlined by Sogyal Rinpoche in the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. In this exercise think of dividing yourself into two aspects, an aspect of yourself as the Open Heart, Part A; and another aspect of yourself which is limited by fear and constriction, Part B. Part A is the you that is compassionate, warm, and caring like a true friend. The part of you that is willing to be there for you, without any judgement or criticism, no matter what your faults or shortcomings may be.

Part B, is the part of you that has been hurt, that feels neglected, misunderstood, frustrated, bitter, victimized, hurt, injured or angry. Reflect on a time or times when you were unjustly treated, or abused, harmed or been wronged by others or society. Place that part of you, that wounded self, directly in front of you. And for the purposes of this exercise take on the role of the part of you, Part A, that is the compassionate Open Heart.

As you gaze with compassion and understanding on the broken parts of yourself, allow your heart to fill completely, taking in all of your wounded self’s suffering and pain. Then breathe it all in. You can visualize this in whichever way is most helpful: as thick dark smoke; as something sticky or unyielding, or a fog filled with poison and defilement. And as you breathe in the pain from your wounded self, the compassion in your heart, your own very kindness, forgiveness, and understanding, melts away all the pain, the suffering and the fear. It is literally transforming the suffering into a healing clear light. Then as you breathe out you can then send this clear light filled with healing, love, warmth, trust, comfort, acceptance, understanding and joy into the parts of you that were once broken.

Only when we know our own darkness well, and when we can also feel compassion for that part of us that knows that darkness, can we be present with the darkness of others. As Pema Chodron advises: Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity. So may we all find healing, understanding and wholeness in this New moon in Pisces. And may it carry us forward, like a life raft lightly floating on rocky waters, over the months ahead.
