The Solar Eclipse in Aquarius

February 9th ~ 16th

I was born during an eclipse. I believe very much in astrology. If you were born on an eclipse it indicates your destiny is chaotic. ~ Gloria Vanderbilt

Sabian Symbol for 28 Aquarius: A tree fueled and sawed to ensure a supply of wood for the Winter.

(preparing for the future in natural surroundings, using both physical strength and ingenuity)

When we go out to meet life with all of its challenges, and having to prepare for all eventualities, we find ourselves needing to fall back on our resources, using whatever skills and strengths we have to our best advantage. But if we also do so, being mindful to work with the natural cycles of the earth and the cosmos, doing everything at the appropriate time and in the right way; everything we do will be invested with that much more significance. And so we are advised with the Sabian Symbol for the degree of the upcoming Partial Solar Eclipse on February 15th, to prepare for the future.

Marc Edmund Jones, who had the task of recording these inspired symbols, gave as the key words for this degree: “Intelligent Foresight.” This also makes sense when looking at the Solar Eclipse in context with the planetary aspects and sign: a conjunction with Mercury, exalted in the sign of Aquarius (perception, awareness, mind); and a sextile to illuminating and future-oriented Uranus, the modern ruling planet of Aquarius. Both the sign Aquarius, and the planet Uranus, are about ‘foresight.’ There is an element of ingenuity, of awareness, inventiveness and the feeling that we are finally able to see a situation with clarity and understanding. With this comes a sense of hope, anticipation, and illumination about the future, as possibilities and alternatives seem to unfold.

Tomorrow, I believe, is to be an eclipse of the sun, and I think it perfectly meet and proper that the sun in the heavens, and the glory of the Republic should both go into obscurity and darkness together. ~ Benjamin F. Wade

Americans take note: the Great American Eclipse last Summer was almost directly opposite this Eclipse within a few degrees. What made it particularly relevant last August was its path of visibility which cascaded over many of the American states from Washington to South Carolina. What is also significant about the degrees of both of these eclipses, is that they cross the American President’s Leo/Aquarius, Ascendant/Descendant axis and the planet Mars… a (very loud) and sensitive point in his chart. There is no doubt these eclipses are stirring something up. Some questions to ask: Will this Eclipse mirror the previous Solar Eclipse? Could this Eclipse act as a catalyst for events that have been gradually brewing and simmering on the back burner over the past year?

On their own, Eclipses can be highly unpredictable and even life altering, especially if it hits a sensitive point in your chart. It is true that there are times when they appear to be negligible. Or the effects seem to be more internal and subtle. However, even subtle changes within the auspices of the Eclipses, can have major ramifications. These are times when the veil between the worlds seem to thin, and when karmic causes appear to ripen. As a result these can be very powerful times of new beginnings with profound consequences. Often times, especially with the South Node attending Eclipses, such as this one, something needs to end, in order to allow the new beginning to take hold.

The Sun represents our vital energy, and especially with the Solar Eclipse, even a Partial Solar Eclipse such as this one will be, it can literally feel as if our energy is being eclipsed as well. The space that we are currently traveling in between the Lunar and Solar Eclipses can feel like a crazy roller coaster of emotion, and an overload of information. This is that place where space is altered, time warps converge, and all we can do is walk through this turbulent period till we reach the other side.

Eclipses are times when everything is shifting just enough to allow the seeds of new experiences to find fertile ground in which to grow. With Aquarius some of these experiences could be:

  • Finding a group that shares the same ideals or aspirations as you do
  • Realizing that so much more can be accomplished in the company of others, than could possibly be done on your own
  • Being inspired through a group to fulfill your destiny or pursue a vision for the future
  • Becoming aware of new opportunities to expand your world in some significant way
  • Having a larger Vision emerge in the company of others

Due to this being a South Node attending Solar Eclipse, it is also important to not allow your personal integrity or principles to be compromised by the group. Keep your eyes and ears open, and refuse to be drawn along on a populist tide. Just because everyone else is believing something to be so, doesn’t necessarily make it right for you. It is also often the case that truths are revealed at these times that can literally change the perspective, direction and landscape of our lives. All the more so this week with these illuminating sextiles from mind-bending Uranus to both the Solar Eclipse and Mercury.

If you wish to set intentions (positive affirmations) with the New Moon Eclipse, the best time to do so, is after the New Moon, Thursday the 15th at 4:06 PM EST (1:06 PM PST; 9:06 PM UTC), and up until the Crescent Moon on Monday, the 19th at 1:49 PM EST (10:49 AM PST; 6:49 PM UTC). After you make your intentions: write them down, And then give them up to the Universe, and allow them to manifest in their own way, in their own time. If it doesn’t feel quite right, you can always re-write them again.
