Staying Present with Mercury Retrograde

December 1st ~ 8th

Mercury Retrograde phase December 3rd thru 24th

The things of Mercury have already been a little wonky these past few weeks. It is beyond just the ‘shadow’ phenomenon. This is because Mercury is stationing in the same degree of Saturn. This will be followed by the New Moon on December 18th, also at this same degree of Sagittarius. The effect of Saturn on those things of Mercury (communications; travel; the internet; commerce) will increase obstacles and delays. Mercury/Saturn often feels like we are either not connecting; or not communicating well. The effect of Mercury stationing on the same degree of Saturn is one of deep reflection, review and the need to ‘sort things out’. We often become aware of our limits when Saturn is about. Saturn also allows us to set appropriate limits. For instance, realizing that it may be in your best interest to step back from an obligation that is proving to be untenable.

The general advice with these Mercury retrograde periods is to not make any major decisions yet. Often what seems like a good idea when Mercury is retrograde will have its issues revealed later when Mercury is direct again. It is, however, a good time to reflect and review. Saturn first entered Sagittarius in December of 2014, and except for a brief return to Scorpio, has been there ever since. On December 19th Saturn will then enter Capricorn. This is a good time to reflect on what has transpired since 2015, what has brought you to this place and time. This will give you a basis of understanding where you might want to go from here. During these 3 week Mercury retrograde phases we are assimilating and processing. This is how we learn. This is how we grow.

What to watch for during the retrograde phase:

Communications: Mail and texts get lost, messages misunderstood or not received at all. Don’t make assumptions, and make sure you have all the information. Not the best time for important decisions or life choices. There is a good chance that you will change your mind later. If you absolutely must sign documents, try to get a reliable 3rd party to double-check the details.

Technology: can go haywire. Try to avoid buying new computers, phones or cars if it can at all be helped. If things need to be fixed: fix them! Back up your computer, calendar and data.

Schedules and Plans: Allow for changes. People change their minds. Things break down. Be flexible.

Travel: Allow for possible changes. Bring a good book, and plenty of patience. Double check reservations. Make lists and double check them as well. Travel isn’t always wonky during these times, but they certainly seem to be more so. Exceptions can be: going back home or to a place you often go.

What the retrograde phase is good for:

Unfinished business: The first half of this retrograde phase is particularly good for ‘sorting things out’ and ‘organizing’ things. All those projects you’ve put on the back burner? This is your opportunity to tackle them! These phases are often good for ‘finishing’ things; studying; re-reading a book; reviewing a subject you studied before.

Assimilating information: Ditto on the studying and reviewing! It is also a good time to reflect and review; not only the past few months; but also the past few years.

Mindfulness: Anxiety levels can increase during the retrograde phase. However, one of the things that this phase is good for are exercises in mindfulness. This normally would be difficult with Mercury in Sagittarius. However, Saturn helps channel our minds so that we can focus and concentrate. And a nice trine to Uranus can also open up insights. Try mind/body exercises; meditation; MBSR; therapy; yoga; or other modalities that address anxiety and acknowledge the mind/body connection.

Reunions: are often a hallmark of the retrograde phases as we tend to be in reflecting and reminiscing mode any way. It’s not unusual to wonder what ever happened to Harry or Jane, and wanting to catch up with them.

Personal insight: This can and does include creative insights. This will be particularly true from the 7th thru 12th when Mercury is also trine Uranus! In order to get the most benefit from this period, allow some silence, take some breaks from your busy schedule (if you can!), turn off the electronics and media, and allow yourself to connect with yourself. Mercury retro in Sagittarius is particularly good for silent hikes; walking meditations; religious or spiritual retreats.

Letting go of unresolved issues: Practice patience and understanding. Remember that to forgive and to let go does not mean that you think other people’s actions are ‘forgivable’, it means that you are able to move on.

Jupiter trine Neptune exact December 2nd

There is a strong sense of spiritual destiny and community when these two work together, and it is likely that many are, or will be, inspired to apply these ideals and aspirations to their daily lives. We should see a broader concern for humanitarian concerns; human rights; animal rights the rights of those who have been silenced or disenfranchised. Through this transit connections can be made, either to a teacher, a teaching or a community that will further your spiritual aspirations, or with whom you share a common destiny, ideal or vision. Great strides can be made in developing and cultivating insight, intuition, the imagination, or any sort of spiritual or artistic gift. It is also simply a window of opportunity to connect to those things that make your life more meaningful and give it a deeper purpose. This transit is exact December 2nd, but will continue through much of December; and will be exact again in May and August of 2018.

Full Moon in Gemini square Neptune December 3rd

Full Moons are times of culmination, when we reap the results of causes already set in motion. Gemini and Sagittarius are most likely to feel this Full Moon, as well as those who have these signs prominent in their natal charts. Gemini is a Mercury sign, and it’s not to be ignored that the retrograde station of Mercury occurs on the same day as the Full Moon. The general expectation with this sort of Moon is one of confusion and indecision. Neptune can make us feel as if we do not have all the information; that we are being deceived, deluded or distracted. All the more reason to stay in the present, and focus on what is in front of you. We don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring; we cannot change the past; and the only thing we really have is right now. Therefore, if you cannot decide, let it go for now and put it on the shelf. If you can’t do anything about a problem right now, same thing, let it go. Things that may arise in the light of this Full Moon are: deception; false news; confusion; problems with communications in general; and difficulties while traveling. What this Moon could be good for: taking some time out; daydreams; fantasy; going to the movies; meditation; reading a good book; being inspired; letting go and letting be; accepting that some things cannot be put into words; and some things simply cannot be known.

Chiron Stations Direct December 5th

For the past 5 months, Chiron, the wounded centaur, has been retrograde in the sign of Pisces. Chiron in Pisces is the enlightened pathfinder, forging a new path based on faith. The aim is healing and wholeness and acceptance. The key is in figuring out what is necessary in oder to achieve that healing and wholeness. But first we must become aware of the fact that we have certain wounds. And that was what the retrograde period was for. These may have been wounds in society; in our communities; or in ourselves. We may or may not be able to do anything about them. However, through accepting that there is a wound, we are more capable of either finding the best remedy or coping methods that work for you. Now we are being given the green light to not only apply these remedies, but to share them with others.
