October 27th ~ November 3rd
From the ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggety beasties,
And things that go bump in the night.
Good Lord, deliver us!

This coming week, Saturn in Sagittarius will make an exact square to Chiron in Pisces. This has been an ongoing transit for the past year. There will be another square between these two in 2018, but by then, Saturn will have moved into Capricorn and Chiron will be in Aries, which will change the story somewhat. There will still be some prevailing themes here, but in a different context. Saturn in Sagittarius is about truth, it’s about justice and our core beliefs. It challenges us to walk the walk as well as talk the talk, even under extraordinary pressure to do otherwise.
Chiron has been undermining the integrity of Saturn. Even those who have specific standards of behavior and strong beliefs, may feel the necessity to compromise those beliefs. This could be because of a fear of being ostracized, and a desire to be accepted. It could also be that in order to achieve one’s agenda, it feels like it is necessary to collude with people that are less than ethical. The way to rationalize this is to think that the end justifies the means. It doesn’t.
When Saturn in Sagittarius goes south, you see this compromise of ethical and moral standards, that allows the crud of society to rise to the surface. Sagittarius has to do with travel, with immigration, with religions, with beliefs, and also with deeply held prejudices and fears of the ‘other’. Saturn also represents authority and government, meaning that even at the top there are questions ethical behavior. Saturn in Sagittarius demands that we stand by our core beliefs even when under pressure. Chiron is the bridge between our lower rational mind, and our higher, more universal consciousness. Chiron can give us the tools to build that bridge. But unfortunately, unless we stand by our core beliefs, and firmly live up to our own moral standards, Saturn as the stern and critical judge, will deny us access to the very tools and solutions we need.
Saturn gives us permission to say No, to set our own boundaries, and to have the integrity to define when enough is enough.
And then there’s Halloween
Listen to them ~ the children of the night. What music they make! ~ Bram Stoker
There are 8 corners of the Solar Calendar Year. The 4 Cardinal corners coincide with the turning of the Seasons. And then there are the 4 Fixed corners which stand between the seasonal corners. Halloween stands at one of these Fixed corners, here in the fixed sign of Scorpio, the sign of birth, death and rebirth. This is the Day of the Dead, All Saints Day, All Hallows Eve: all celebrations commemorating the dearly departed. The veil between these realms is lifted just enough at this time, to allow the wraiths of the dead to return for one last farewell. They do this as we move from the season of birth and renewal, into the season of death and decay.
Today the season is celebrated with costumed children making their rounds like so many fairies and demons from beyond the veil, begging for treats and offerings. The signs and sigils remain from ancient times: the ghosts, the lanterns, the ghouls, the costumes. Ancient Druid priests also wore masks in order to roam freely among the spirits, as did the Celtic country folk who wore masks at night to frighten off the demons, goblins and gremlins that threatened to wreak havoc on those who dared travel at night. Masks are both protection and defense against our unseen fears.
In ancient Ireland bonfires were lit in honor of the fading sun. They were seen to serve as a beacon to remind the Sun not to forget us, but to return once more from the underworld. And so we continue to mark this magical time of year, with a mixture of both remorse for the fading of the light, and also anticipation for its eventual return.
