June 16th ~ 23rd
Hidden by diaphanous clouds of mist and fog floating gracefully over vales of heather and flowing runnels, she began to dance. ~ Lawren Leo
We have reached that time of year when Neptune slows for its retrograde station. Neptune is retrograde for about 5 months of the year, every year. Therefore this is not a momentous occasion. But what it does do, is shift the emphasis from external application to internal development of all things Neptune. Planets are also stronger when retrograde, and especially so at the stations, when they appear to stand still. So it makes sense to pay attention to what we are being called to embrace, at this liminal phase of Neptune’s journey.
In 2016, Saturn was exactly square Neptune when it stationed, limiting and qualifying its highest expression. It was harsh, murky and painful. This is certainly not so this year where the closest aspects are a conjunction to the Moon and an approaching sextile to Venus, with whom Neptune has filial ties. There is also a very close quincunx to Jupiter which has been lounging on the back burner for some time. This is weather much more attuned to Neptune’s “diaphanous clouds of mist and fog floating gracefully over vales of heather and flowing runnels”. Weather that both deceptively hides and furtively shields against prying eyes, but also affords opportunities to develop Neptune's more ideal qualities.
He wept, and it felt as if the tears were cleansing him, as if his body needed to empty itself. ~ Lois Lowry
It can sometimes feel as if some of the more insidious aspects of Neptune arise when it stations retrograde: helplessness, loss, surrender, floods, despair, and dissolving into the watery depths. But there is another aspect to Neptune, and this is about the willing sacrifice of our own self-centered material gratification, for that which is Divine or the Ideal. It is about making something sacred. We all have inner ideals, something that we consider to be pure, even spiritual and transcendent in some glorious way. Neptune is calling us to reacquaint ourselves with those ideals that we may have put aside, and/or ignored in the commotion of our busy lives.
With Neptune stations come an increased sensitivity to our feelings, our senses, and our intuition. It dissolves boundaries, and blurs edges. We become more aware of the suffering in the world and in our own lives. We weep. We can also fall in thrall of his desire to disappear and or escape, or drown our sorrows. Especially if we do not have a positive outlet, or some kind of inner relationship with those things which bring meaning into our lives; which connect us to Spirit, Soul, Higher Self, our Ideals. Not having these outlets could feel like something very important is missing from our lives. Whatever it is that draws you to pay attention to that inner divine, sensitive nature is calling you, whether that be through a spiritual practice, or the arts, or compassionate service.
For those who are so inclined, it is also a good time to work on our inner Neptune: the intuition, our psychic senses, that inner voice, conscience, that which tunes you in to see or sense what is going on around you. Use this time of year to pay special attention to dreams, as these are more likely to speak to you now. Keep a dream diary. Create a positive environment in which to cultivate positive dreams. Seek inspiration, both from within and without.
Do also realize that for those who are particularly sensitive and vulnerable, this increase in Neptunian psychic energy could feel overwhelming or draining. Therefore do not overload it even further. Avoid disturbing, depressing, poisonous and draining individuals and circumstances, as we will all be a little more impressionable. Also minimize mind altering substances and alcohol that can increase vulnerability and susceptibility to negative influences. The key is to feed your psychic and spiritual nature during this critical part of the year, not drain, mask, or poison it in any way.
Positively Neptune softens boundaries in order for us to be able to realize our connection with others, with all of humanity, with all other beings, as well as our Mother Earth. Neptune rules the oceans and the waters, and it should become more apparent that we are all swimming in this same Ocean of Life together, dependent upon one another for our existence and experience.
Neptune will be retrograde from June 16th thru November 22nd. What the retrograde phase of Neptune is good for are:
- Paying attention to your dreams: keep a dream diary or a notepad by your bed; and take steps to cultivate positive dreams
- Spiritual retreats or practices: whether a yoga class or other mind/body practices; going to places of worship, spirituality or meditation.
- Meditation: this is your chance to take your meditations even deeper.
- Visiting art museums: or any museums for that matter!
- Going to concerts: reinvigorating a musical interest; dance recitals; and poetry jams.
- Finding practical ways to put your compassion into actions. Volunteer. Donate. Or pay it forward. Sometimes it is as simple as noticing when a neighbor needs an extra hand.
- Taking an art, music or poetry class.
- Enjoying movies, the theater or photography.
- Getting in touch with your highest ideals and honoring these, even if you cannot fulfill them right away.
- Swimming, boating, or anything to do with or in or surrounding the water.
- Being immersed in the beauty and profundity of nature.
- Dancing in the mist.
