February 10th ~ 17th
Morality is the basis of things and truth is the substance of all morality. ~ Mahatma Gandhi
If you happen to be out and about tonight, and you are on the side of the planet where it is night time and visible (Europe, Africa, western Asia, and the East coast of the Americas), you may get to see the penumbral eclipse of the Moon. This is not your blood red total Lunar Eclipse. This is a more subtle eclipse, casting a partial shadow that merely darkens the Full Moon temporarily. The Eclipse occurs in the sign of Leo, as we transition from a series of Virgo/Pisces eclipses into the next series of eclipses along the Leo/Aquarius axis. The Solar Eclipse on February 26th will be an Annular Eclipse in Pisces tying up issues spawned in the heart of the Solar Eclipse in Virgo this past September. But today’s Lunar Eclipse is a harbinger of things to come. We will be addressing this sign axis shift in the Nodes and the Eclipses later this year, when the Nodes shift and the next set of Eclipses occur in August.
Eclipses rarely arrive without a hint of drama. All the more so in the flamboyant sign of Leo, the sign of Royalty, Leaders and Heads of State. This Eclipse follows shortly after the station of Jupiter this past week, and Jupiter is digging down deeply while closely opposing Uranus. This Jupiter/Uranus opposition is an aspect of quick and sudden changes; sudden shifts and break ups of alliances, associations and treaties; feeling like we are being forced beyond our comfort zones… it can feel like utter chaos.
The Lunar Eclipse forms a Grand Trine with Aquarius rulers Saturn and Uranus in the fire signs of Aries and Sagittarius, which further creates a dynamic and active Cradle, the Sun and Jupiter in the Air signs Aquarius and Libra. The Eclipse stands as a catalyst for those rapidly shifting tides mentioned above, while also being stabilized by stalwart Saturn traveling in Sagittarius. As a result, we are caught in this game of Truth or Consequences, as we are pulled between the extremes of rebellious activism on the one hand; and fear on the other, as it may seem that the very structures of our lives that we depend on, are being compromised.
Lunar Eclipses have this way of revealing things, bringing things out into the open. Sometimes they can bring something to a head, or to some sort of crisis. Something that had been simmering on the back burner and behind the scenes, is about to boil over, and cannot be contained in this weather. The Sun is the ‘ruler’ of Leo, and traveling in innovative and illuminating Aquarius, truths can only be hidden so long. Coincidentally, because of the way that all of the planets are lined up surrounding the Eclipse, there is also a great deal of creative potential brewing here. New challenges, new information, and new circumstances require new and innovative solutions, and this Lunar Eclipse is here, if nothing else, to inspire us to find those solutions.
This is a North Node attending eclipse, wide and still navigating through the travails of Virgo (healthcare, workers, wages, the middle class, the disenfranchised). Nonetheless these North Node eclipses have the ability to usher in a whole new set of experiences and can therefore shift our understanding and perspective. What is revealed to us in the light of this eclipse could change the picture, change plans, and even change the course of our lives, quickly and unexpectedly. This is especially true if it touches a personal point in one’s natal chart. You may have already felt the effects of this eclipse, for they are active several weeks in advance, and their ramifications can be felt for months after. And this one may be particularly interesting to us all as we are in the process of moving from an old order, to this newer, more fiery, vibrant and progressive order.
But I suppose the most revolutionary act one can engage in is… to tell the truth. ~ Howard Zinn
