The Solstice: Holding the Light

December 23rd ~ 30th

I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness for it shows me the stars. ~ Og Mandlino

The Solstice on December 21st, ushered us into Yuletide, the Season and Festival of Lights, which for this upcoming Holiday Season, has all the Holy Days converging at once. In the Northern Hemisphere, the time of the Winter Solstice is the dark time of year. Fire, which is a symbol of light and the Sun, has always played an essential part in the lore and symbolism of this time of year. Without the light and the heat of the Sun, nothing can grow or thrive. So fire, the Sun’s terrestrial counterpart, serviced the hearths and homes in times of yore, as a link to the life-giving essence of the Sun. And then these fires would be maintained throughout the season, and would not be allowed to die out. This was a reminder that the Sun would indeed return once again with its warmth and light.

And in this time of reflection, deepened by Mercury’s retrograde journey, we are being reminded to hold that light in our souls and in our hearts. Many of the prevailing long-term transits are perfecting this coming week: Jupiter’s 1st of 3 oppositions to Uranus on December 26th, Saturn’s 1st of 3 trines to Uranus on December 24th, and Saturn’s 1st of 3 squares to Chiron on December 28th. This all culminates with the Uranus Direct Station, and New Moon in Capricorn on December 29th. What an incredibly intense week we are navigating as we delve deep into the heart of the Mercury retrograde on the 28th, the beginning of the New Mercury cycle. These transits are setting the tone for 2017, a year fraught with divides, fear and uncertainty, but which is also challenging us to find creative and alternative solutions in order to accommodate to these unpredictable times. In so doing we are also being asked to align our personal goals with our ideals. Walking the walk, as well as talking the talk.

Not everyone’s ideals and goals are going to be on the same page, though, and Mars in Pisces has the potential to stir up a bit of agitation this weekend, in his own inimitable way. Be prepared to back track, and readjust plans, especially around the 26th when Mars tangles with that unpredictable Jupiter/Uranus opposition that is coming to perfection that day.

However, Venus, which is traveling in the sign of Aquarius, will be engaging Jupiter, as well as the co-rulers of Aquarius, Saturn and Uranus over the holiday week. And she does so as the modern ruler of Aquarius comes to Station next Thursday. Uranus is an outer planet, that recognizes its interdependence with all of humanity. When planets station, they are even stronger, more powerful in their message. Yes, Uranus is also a planet of rebellion, surprises and sudden change, but it is also a beacon of light, truth, understanding, and humanitarian ideals. Amidst the festivities of the season, is a growing heart of generosity and good will, that like the heart of the grinch, grows 3 sizes, perhaps many, many sizes this week. Love and light and hope win this week. May we feed that good will with gratitude, acts of generosity and kindness towards others. Even the smallest acts of kindness have the capacity to grow exponentially in this weather.

The New Mercury Cycle

Wednesday marks the middle of the retrograde phase of Mercury, when it enters the heart of the Sun and disappears within its rays. Later it will emerge as a morning star, but for now it is turned within. Thoughts like seeds, are being planted, initiating the next cycle of mental focus, learning, understanding and growth. Coming on the dark side of the New Moon on the 29th, this is a good time to set mindful intentions that you would like to see developed over the next several months. Take some time in the days surrounding the New Moon, to reflect, to think about what you have learned, to contemplate, to meditate. Ask yourself, what mental states would you like to see developed? What more would you like to learn about? What seeds of light and love, what new mental habits would you like to see take hold? Patience? Generosity? Kindness? Compassion?

Some people are much more sensitive to the phases of Mercury than others. More often it is more annoying than anything: things break down; repairs are needed; offers are withdrawn; plans are changed. However, the true purpose of these retrograde periods are assimilation and reflection. They help us to learn and to grow from our experiences. If we have the luxury of taking time off, they can be quite helpful in reorienting our perspectives, and gaining wisdom.
