Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life, and you will call it fate. ~ C.G. Jung
Eclipses occur when our two sacred orbs, the Sun and the Moon, come into perfect alignment in such a way that one or the other becomes partially or totally obscured. What makes these transitional times so profound, has to do with what these orbs represent in our lives. The Sun represents our very life force that courses through our bodies, and invests us with life, existence and conscious identity. The Moon represents our soul's yearnings, traveling back through our DNA and the remote recesses of our soul’s journey, usually buried deeply within our subconscious memory. Where and when these two meet, at the Nodes of the Moon, is revealed the very story of our Life Path and Sacred Journey. We see these in snippets as pieces of our story are revealed, or we pause in these liminal spaces as stories end, and new stories begin. And as we try to get our bearings, it can sometimes feel a bit like chaos. It can also be accompanied by sheer exhaustion. These are times of change and evolution, as the spark within that was once incipient and potential, becomes manifest.
This week we stand between these two time warp portals, the Lunar and Solar eclipses. However this is no respite. This weekend, Mars, a catalyst for action, will transit directly opposite the degree of last week's Lunar Eclipse, accelerating the potential contained there. Mars in Leo, when it goes south, can be loud, posturing and arrogant; fiery and dramatic. President Trump, who has Mars rising in Leo near the degree of the upcoming Solar Eclipse, often demonstrates the unfortunate qualities of this Mars, such as his recent posturing against North Korean President, Kim Jong Un. In the shadow of Mercury retrograde many of us will be guilty of saying regrettable things, but not with quite the same ramifications. These kinds of actions only throw more fuel on the fire of the changeable, and ignitable, eclipse season.
These Mars in Leo periods are also opportunities for us to prove to ourselves and others what we are capable of achieving. Mars in Leo can bring confidence to the doubtful, pride to the forlorn, courage to the fearful. These eclipse periods can often feel like chaos, but they are also opportunities for evolutionary growth. If you find yourself on the threshold of change and transformation, do not resist, for it is a sign of what is trying to emerge, from within, out.
Changing is not just changing the things outside of us. First of all we need the right view that transcends all notions including of being and non-being, creator and creature, mind and spirit. That kind of insight is crucial for transformation and healing. Thich Nhat Hanh
Mercury stations retrograde this weekend (August 12th or 13th) as it makes an opposition to Neptune, the planet of illusion. Mercury is in Virgo, a sign seeking clarity, the desire to make Sense of the Insensible, to Organize and rationalize our senses, feelings and perceptions of our external and internal environment. At this point we ask ourselves if we truly are on the correct path, and whether we continue to have confidence and faith in that path. For the 3 weeks that Mercury will be retrograde we are being given the opportunity to assimilate, analyze and make sense of all of the experiences and information that we have been receiving. With the opposition to Neptune, we may be having some healthy doubts and a bit of confusion. Sit with that. It is best not to make major decisions just yet. But it is an important time to become familiar with our own minds, and gain deeper understanding.
We often become inundated by the inconveniences associated with the Mercury retrograde period that we can easily miss out on the whole purpose of this phase of the Mercury cycle. In our own personal lives the retrograde phase of Mercury, which lasts until September 5th, brings the usual advice: Avoid making major decisions if it can be at all helped, as one’s perspective can and often does change once Mercury is direct again. Allow time for delays while traveling, recognizing that time and schedules are on vacation, even if we are not. Messages can become garbled, communications misconstrued, therefore do not make any assumptions, and make sure you have all the facts.
What this Mercury retrograde phase is good for is working on our own minds and hearts: deep analysis; reassessment; review; research; deep thought that can lead to understanding; discovery; finishing up projects; getting rid of old clutter; fixing things the way they should have been in the first place; revisiting the past; reunions; going back to a place you once knew; reflection; and finally, getting down to the business of understanding and organizing our inner and outer lives.
